State of the Garden - 2 April 2009

And now it is officially garden season for me! Yippee. (Insert jumping and clicking heels together here.) So here is a quick and very incomplete tour of what is going on and growing up so far.

Blueberries are blooming.

The first small green buds that will be branches and leaves are showing on the new apple trees.

Potatoes are showing above the soil. Here are All Blue.

Here the 2 new beds are slowly getting planted as the season changes. Purple cauliflower and onions in the front, with radishes, carrots, peas, brocolli, brussel sprouts and other colder weather crops starting the more rapid growth phase. Some unfortunate tomato transplants I decided to risk a bit early struggle valiantly, remaining far more stunted than their brethren under grow lights in the house.

And, of course, Boscoe the Big Man, as he fruitlessly examines the beds for any carrots he might dig up when I look away.

Your garden looks great! I have SO much work to do on mine, and am hoping to finally have more than a 15 minute stretch tomorrow.

Oh, I'm so jealous. We are expecting low temps in the mid 20s over the weekend into next week. Sigh. I'll just have to wait for the weather to stabilize a bit more. I was talking to my Dad today and he's hoping to be able to plant his potatoes on Good Friday. That's the traditional day to plant them here. I'm just not sure the weather will cooperate this year.

We just moved into our home this last winter and won't be able to enjoy our raised garden beds with potatoes until next year! But we do have apple blossoms, blueberries and raspberries coming in!

I look forward to reading more.

PS: Go get your self a donkey. ;)

Does the SFG method have a method for potatoes? I'm guessing they are better in rows so they can be hilled. Hurray spring! Kris

I'm jealous too. Nothing I've planted is even up yet, and I suspect a lot of the seeds rotted from all the unrelenting wet. I'm going to have to start over.

Your weather is coastal VA is definitively warmer than mine in the Piedmont - almost mountains. It'll be a week or two for the earliest blueberry blossom. And no potatoes leaves either - yet.

I am as excited as you about everything that's growing in the kitchen garden.

A very nice start to the season. Those raised beds look very nice and your strawberry patch is pretty cool. I know what you mean about the underlying soil. My garden is over a layer of solid rock. Keep up the good work!!

Looking good! I even saw hoop covers in the background of one pic. Nicely done. Very impressive. Can't wait to see all those veggies at harvest time!
